Collection Agencies
At all costs you should avoid having an account go to collections. However, Life Happens! If you have an account in collections do not be intimidated by the collector. Here are some tips.
- Never make an arrangement to pay when you get a first call from a collector. Ask them for their name, company they work for, company they are collecting for, account number and a phone number to call them back. Let them know you will get back to them in 3 business days. (This will give you enough time to come up with a plan to deal with the matter if it is your account). If they refuse, call the creditor and report the collection company and the agent.
- Never pay by credit card to a collection agency.
- Collectors can legally call you several times per day. However, if you advise them you will return a call to them in 3 (three) business days, then you should not hear from them until the time has expired. If they continually call you during that time, advise them that you will be reporting them to the Ministry. You don't have to give them a reason for the 3 days and if they press you for one, simply advise you need to verify the collection account with the creditor.
- We negotiate collection accounts with all agencies in Canada and the United States for significantly less than they will offer you as a settlement. Before accepting a settlement offer with a third party collection agency, contact us, we can get you a better deal.
